Two leading partners set new standards
Vossloh–a key player on the European market for designing and manufacturing diesel locomotives–has broadened its locomotive range in cooperation with the world's most successful manufacturer of diesel-electric locomotives, Electro-Motive Diesel, Inc. (EMD). The high-powered EURO 4000, which is fitted with an EMD high-efficiency diesel engine, electric driveline and proven auxiliary equipment, has been designed and is built by Vossloh Rail Vehicles to satisfy the specific needs of passenger and freight railway operators throughout Europe. Both Vossloh Rail Vehicles and EMD enjoy an excellent international reputation thanks to their 50-year history of jointly locomotives to countries such as Spain, Israel, the UK, and the USA.

EMD–Electro-Motive Diesel, Inc.
Throughout its long history, EMD (formerly known as the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors) has supplied over 58,000 EMD-powered locomotives worldwide. EMD engines are reputed to be among the best locomotive engines in the world, consistently delivering superior reliability, durability, and low life-cycle costs. The extremely powerful and fuel-efficient engine that EMD supplies for the EURO 4000 is based on proven solutions for North American customers such as Union Pacific, Canadian National, Norfolk Southern, BNSF, and CSX.

The EURO 4000:
Since 2007 the EURO 4000 has been the most powerful diesel-electric locomotive available on the European market. The EURO 4000 features Co’-Co’ axle configuration, two-cabin design and AC/DC traction. EMD's most fuel-efficient turbocharged V-16 two-stroke diesel engine (16-710) with electronic fuel injection serves to power the locomotive with an impressive 4,250 HP DIN. In conjunction with the optimum performance of the driveline, the unit is capable of hauling heavier and longer freight trains, thus increasing operator competitiveness and efficiency. Thanks to its high power rating and technical characteristics the EURO 4000 is fast enough to allow other passenger trains to operate at their own regular speeds without having to slow down.

Flexible operation
As the EURO 4000 runs independently of overhead power, it has a high degree of flexibility. Enhanced traction capacity means it can both be used to haul heavy trains up steep slopes as well as lighter trains at high speeds. The locomotive runs on both electrified and non-electrified lines. As a result, optimum use can be made of less busy lines and destinations can be reached more quickly. The EURO 4000 is also suitable for cross-border operations since it is easily adaptable to various European signaling systems and, last but not least, is fully prepared for ETCS installation. The EURO 4000 is fitted with a state-of-the-art communications system and GPS, the latter permitting the operator to keep track of each train at all times, choose the most favorable route and optimize logistics and intermodal activities. A GSM data transmission system ensures any M&R work required is immediatly relayed to the maintenance stations, thereby minimizing downtime.

Compliance with all European standards
The EURO 4000 was designed by leading specialists in the railway sector–Vossloh and EMD. These two companies have already supplied hundreds of customers around the world with diesel locomotives that assure a high degree of availability, optimum life-cycle costs and the added certainty of a ready supply of parts throughout the unit's service life. The EURO 4000 naturally also complies with all European norms (emissions, noise, crash, fire, etc.), is suitable for UIC-gauge lines and capable of running on rail networks throughout Europe.

Low operating costs, easy maintenance and eco-friendly
Minimum M&R costs due to:

  • modular design permitting easy assembly, disassembly and complete module replacements
  • amply dimensioned components with a long service life and low maintenance needs
  • maximum standardization of parts and maintenance procedures
  • easy access to components
  • a reduced-wheelbase bogie with a high rail-adhesion factor and low maintenance costs

As maintenance has been reduced to a few simple operations, the locomotive can be in service for long periods of time. It has low fuel consumption also due to the highly efficient diesel engine, traction and optimized auxiliary systems.

Thanks to this low fuel consumption and a fuel-tank capacity of 7,000 liters the EURO 4000 can cover distances of up to 2,000 km without having to refuel, depending on nature of the operation. And it does all this with remarkably little noise since it complies with HS RST TSI standards for noise emission.

Comfort and safety
In addition to its impressive set of technical features, the EURO 4000 provides optimum driving conditions with a spacious cab offering increased visibility. The latter has been designed in accordance with the EM 12663, UIC 651 and DIN 5566 standards and includes state-of-the-art, European-style controls. Finally, the cab is separately air-conditioned, assuring agreeable conditions for the driver.

The shock-resistant, DIN 5566-compliant windshield not only further enhances the driver's safety but also ensures minimum noise levels in the cab, which features fire-protection in accordance with EN 45.545. Finally, the integrated TSI CR crash system makes sure both the driver and the locomotive are protected in the event of a collision.

The locomotive complies with UIC 518 gauge standards in terms of track strain, safety, and performance. It conforms with EN 12299 regarding ride comfort.
